…Or rather, overcoming procrastination.
Putting off doing the things we know we need to do is one of the most destructive, insidious habits we hold, and we all do it.
There are many underlying reasons which cause people to put off effective activities, and often those reasons come down to fear or discomfort. These fears can be well-hidden, even from ourselves, and can be masked by other behaviours as well.
The good news is, once you can root out your reasons for not doing what you should be doing, you can change things.

FACT: Only by changing our thoughts and actions can we change our results.
Here are some examples of why people procrastinate. Ask yourself if these apply to you, and realize that even though the acknowledgement may be uncomfortable, the results of NOT acknowledging where we are sabotaging ourselves can be devastating, and irreversible.
- Fear of the unknown – Perhaps you are not even sure what to do, so you do nothing.
- Fear of the unknown 2 – You know what to do, but you are afraid of change…what will actually happen if you begin to change things? What will that look like? What will happen to your relationships, etc?…
- Wrong priorities – Could you be spending your time and thoughts on issues which aren’t even important? TIP: Try Stephen Covey’s book about defining and living priorities – see link at the bottom under resources.
- Rebellion - Do you hate being told what to do? EVEN BY YOURSELF? This is a primary factor for many people who either put off doing things or continue with actions they know are destructive.
- ‘Some day’ syndrome – There’s lots of time, right? You are busy at the moment, and you will invest in thoughts about your future some other time. Maybe things will just work themselves out.
- Head-in-the-sand syndrome – When we get caught up in day-to-day life, we can lose sight of the bigger picture. Eventually, we lift our heads and find we have lived a half-life and we are filled with regret about what might have been. Don’t let this be you.
- It’s too difficult – This is simple. We don’t want to try any harder…and who knows if we’ll achieve what we want anyway?
- This article isn’t about me – Ah, denial! It’s a dream killer just like all the others.
