What is the World’s Problem with Materialism? Are We Ashamed of Success?

It seems everywhere you look, everyone is telling you to shun materalism for some inner peace. While the search for inner peace is pretty great, all the inner peace in the world doesn’t help you when you are standing on the corner in the winter with your kids waiting for the bus…I mean what beats heated seats? I mean seriously what beats heated seats - heat in your car when your hands are freezing, not wanting to stand in the heat or in the cold waiting because you’ve chosen some inner peace over materialism? And then they have a good way to describe it too – called ’Why are you so materialistic?’ HUH!? Then they say ‘Oh it’s not that you can’t want things but excess is wrong…and having nothing isn’t wrong???? Being broke isn’t wrong???? Living in a crappy apartment isn’t wrong??? Having no food isn’t wrong???

I got a chance to see the new Spiderman movie – Spiderman 3. Not that I had much choice as my son is a HUGE spiderman fan – I tell you that they get customers from birth, because how can you love spiderman so much that no one can watch anything in the house except spiderman when you cannot even pronouce SPIDERMAN without leaving off the S? - anyway I watched Spiderman 3 – the weekend it came out – from the comfort of my home – FOR FREE. No not bootleg – Internet – the new age of bootleg. :-) ). Now in the last movie Spiderman who is our resident hero lives in a crappy apartment but you know what that’s OKAY – Why, because he is fighting for the greater good. What a load of —-. He can’t even open his door and when his dear old aunt May comes to visit him – of course she got her house foreclosed on by the evil bank – his door handle breaks off. Now through the movie they show spiderman not having much more than a single bed. Not that the room could hold anymore – hello he’s broke, he doesn’t even have a CAR and he can’t even pay his rent as the landlord is always asking for rent. But never mind this because HE IS FIGHTING FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY. While others are sleeping, he is saving a city. While others can get a job, he is busy fighting criminals so you and I can sleep better at night. Don’t even try to tell me I’m over-analyzing and Spiderman is a comic book because whether you watch the Secret – something empowering – or you are watching Spiderman, you are feeding something to your brain.

Someone mentioned to me that if it didn’t have a RICH VILLIAN that it would be boring – no one would go see it. And they are right, because no one wants to say ‘It’s my fault I’m broke’, they want to say it’s the rich guy’s fault ’cause see - even superheros are broke – so nothing wrong if I’m broke too. This is why this latest Spiderman broke the WORLD RECORD of the HIGHEST GROSSING FILM.

I was watching REV RUN – as you know my tv viewing is very diverse, Rapping Reverends and Spiderman. There was this episode of the reverend that took me by total shock. He picks his son up at the bus stop driving a Phantom ($500K car for those who don’t know) or a Lamborgini ($200K car)…and his son is furious! Why – because who does that?! Who picks up their kid in a $500K car from the bus stop? Now the son is upset because other kids are on the bus who see his dad picking him up and now he is embarrassed because of this EXCESS…I’m sitting here going ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So the son diggy says ‘who does that?’. The dad says ‘I do - I drive my Phantom to the bowling alley – I do that.’

What is this that we have where someone should be ashamed of success? You got a nice house, you cant tell anyone where you live. Oh I live where they’ve got a PRIVATE GOLF COURSE in a gated community…Nope – no one wants to hear it. I remember I used to trade stocks and I would have a losing day – I would lose $10k or $20k – I would have no one to talk to. No one wanted to hear it, no one could identify. But they can identify with Peter Parker (SPIDERMAN). After a while you keep your mouth shut – you make $50K today…anyone asks you, ‘How was your day?’ – you say ‘Same ole, Same ole’. You go buy a $100K car and all of a sudden – there should be better ways that you spend your money instead of this EXCESS.

I thought we told people we wanted success and we wanted wealth – yet all indications show that isn’t what we truly want. We want people to stay at the same level we are. Look at them – who do they think they are driving that car, they must think they are someone special. How dare you decide and go buy 20 cars? Buy some jewelry and you might have a mob after you telling you how people are starving while you spend money on excess because there are better ways of using your money than to have EXCESS.

People always seem to have plans for your money, and the more money you have the more they feel you should use it to SAVE THE WORLD. Well forgive me if I don’t play Claire (HEROES) and Save the World! You say Oh my god I got this gorgeous purse for 5K and they are like DOLLARS – Are you serious?! – How could you spend $5K on a purse? You should feel ashamed of yourself while people starve in Timbuktu…

P.S. If I had super hero powers, I wouldn’t live in a crappy apartment allowing the person who raised me to get foreclosed on while driving a little bike, giving up the girl of my dreams (guy in my case) all the WHILE FIGHTING FOR TRUTH AND JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY!

YES!!! I have “friends” who were all about hanging out with me & my hubby when we were struggling financially, but now that we’re handling our money better, got a better paying job, and actually have a little bit extra to bank at the end of the month, we’re “showing off”, “acting better than”, etc. Excuse me?! Um… worked hard to get here, thank you very much!

I’d rather give my daughter a little comfort than two stressed-out parents wondering where the rent’s going to come from, any day of the week.

Quick note – got my TV Guide for next week, and Rev Run is a guest columnist.

When the week’s over, I may frame it.
