I read that this morning after Forbes announced that Warren Buffet had to move over to accomodate the new 2nd richest man in the world, Carlos Slim. Mexican telecom magnate Carlos Slim has quietly overtaken investor Warren Buffet as the world’s second-richest man and is close to wresting the top spot from Bill Gates, Forbes magazine reported Wednesday.

In the two months since Forbes calculated its’ 2007 wealth rankings, the 67-year-old Slim’s fortune rose by $4 billion to $53.1 billion, while Buffett’s holdings slipped to $52.4 billion as of March 29. 

“Our concept is more to accomplish and solve things, rather than giving — that is, not going around like Santa Claus,” Slim said. “Poverty isn’t solved with donations.”

Now I read the story and 3 important things stood out for me:

1) It doesn’t matter where you are from, where you were born or the circumstances of your past. Anyone in the world has the chance to aquire wealth. Most people are escaping Mexico to build a better life for their family, but it is still possible to stay and aquire wealth. As a matter a fact, the top 3 men on the world’s richest list are all SELF MADE BILLIONAIRES. If they can do this so can we…

2) It makes you think twice about how fast you can increase your net worth. Mr. Slim’s net worth increased by 4 BILLION dollars in 2 MONTHS or 60 DAYS or 8 weeks or I can’t even think of any other or’s…the point is when we think of billions we think lifetime of working and investing and acquiring – we don’t think 2 MONTHS!!! This sure gives you a new concept of what is truly possible, doesn’t it? I had never imagined someone could acquire $4 billion in 2 months. Ted Turner increased his earnings by $1 billion in 9 months – he of course said the world is awash with money. It seems that most people can barely get their money to attract more to it, while other people are vibrating money and it comes to them like a long lost friend. The world is awash with money – just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there…

3) This guy said ‘Poverty isn’t solved with donations.’ Most people hold a belief that if rich people just shared the money everyone would be rich and poverty would be solved, but I guarantee that the only thing that would happen is the poor would lose their money and soon all would be back to how it is right now. Giving doesn’t cure anything. I have poor friends – me giving them money does nothing for them – like putting bandaid on a broken leg. Tomorrow they will still blame something or someone else for the state of their lives. It’s more like the story of giving the 5 million dollar mansions to homeless people – it doesn’t solve homelessness – just people with homeless mentality living in mansions.

So can you solve poverty with donations or is it only solved with a mindset change?
